Obituary for Ethel Halligan (Bird)

HALLIGAN, Ethel (nee Bird)

30–11-1913 to 04-08-2013 On angel's wings, a heavenly flight

The journey home, towards the light

A gentle wind blew across the land

Reaching out to take her hand

For on the winds, the angels came

Calling out our Mother's name

Given angel's wings, where might you fly

Lost between the wonder and why

To be an angel, one need not have wings

For the love of family is the greatest of things

With profound sadness, we announce that our Mother passed away peacefully at Trillium Ridge, in her 100th year, on Sunday, August 4th, 2013. Beloved wife of the late John “Hap” Halligan (deceased 1969); daughter of the late William and Cora (nee Hayes) Bird. Loving mother of June (Albert) Fabbri of Portsmouth; Doris (Gordon) Peterkin-MacLean of Oakville; Cora “Tootie” (Ron) Wilson of Kingston; Joan (Mike) Waller of Kingston and Barbara (Richard “Butch”) Winter of Elginburg. Also survived by her daughter-in-law, Galiah “Gay” Halligan, 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren as well as many relatives in both the extended Bird and Halligan families. Predeceased by her only son, John “Sonny/Hap” Halligan; son-in-law Robert “Bob” Peterkin; granddaughter, Patricia (Patti) Peterkin-Rieben; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Carrie and Jack Anson and Annie and Othon Pappas. Up until the age of 94, Mom was able to live independently in her own apartment. She will be lovingly remembered as the matriarch of our family and for her strength and independent spirit. Thankfully, she maintained her wonderful wit and keen sense of humour to the end. A very special thank you to the entire staff at Trillium Ridge. Everyone treated Mom with kindness, compassion and patience and were a source of comfort for her family. Respecting Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private interment will take place at a later date, officiated by long-time family friend, Reverend Oscar Simpson.

Until we meet again……
