Obituary for Samuel Paul Burnett

“I’ve seen your face a hundred times, Everyday we’ve been apart, I don’t care about the sunshine, yeah … cuz Mama I’m coming home” Ozzy Ozbourne

On Friday, August 19, 2022 at 4:26AM, After a 2.5 year valiant fight with cancer, Sam passed away at home where he wanted so much to be, surrounded by his family, and cared for and loved to the very last moments by his spouse Veronica (Vicki) Lamb, and his loving loyal cat Ozzy, and loving nurse dog Sasha who kept him company day and night through his journey, we will miss him so much.

Sam is survived by his dearest mother Neita Laming-Veley, and his two wonderful sons Scott Burnett (Aimee Hull), Sean Burnett (Rachel Burnett), and his only daughter (always his Princess) Amber Burnett (Rob Livingstone). He was the proudest Poppa Chocolate to Brandon Hull, Rylee Burnett, Ella Burnett, Eli Burnett, Bella Burnett, and Emma Burnett. He loved his grandkids so very dearly and he leaves them all in the loving hands of their mother and grandmother Mary Burnett-Thomas.

Sam is also survived by his brother Shawn (Bro) Harris, and sisters Darlene (Dee) Harris and Penelope Huff-Cook. He will be remembered by so many nieces and nephews, and cousins, and especially by his special Uncle Gilles Laming. He will be missed by his Petro Canada family (Mark Snider) and all the employees at the stations he worked.

Sam goes to join his beloved Pop (Roddy) and Nan (Verona Laming), and his best buddy Stu Meeks, and many other family and friends whom he missed so much when they left his life.
Sam went to school for trades and then spent his years working as a finish carpenter, labourer, landscaping and more in the construction trades all over Kingston and surrounding areas, even as far as Ellesmere Island’s Eureka Weather Station, Nunavut with his son Sean. He went on to work for Petro Canada (Mark Snider) as a Car Wash Specialist in stations from Cornwall to Oshawa, where he met his Petro Family and enjoyed his work with them.

Sam was always fixing something from motorcycles and cars to toasters, he was a McGivor of all things, but his love of cars brought him much joy in the last years of his life as he painstakingly painted and built over 150 model kit cars during his cancer journey which brought him much joy and comfort. He also was an avid collector of Harley Davidson swag and many other collections he cherished and loved.
Sammy was a strong man with a big heart, who would do anything for anyone and loved helping people, his children and animals whenever and wherever he was able. His strength was a force to be reckoned with, and it carried him through right to the end. But Sam’s special gift was his laughter and humour and ability to make us all laugh in the face of awkward moments and difficult times. We already miss his smile and the sound of his big loud laugh, but most of all his master storytelling and animated recounts of the glory days.

Sam would like to thank Dr.’s Tomiak and Lawlor at the Regional Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario and the team for the best cancer care in Canada. And Dr.’s V. Legnini and Christopher Davis who looked after him so well. Also the special palliative care he received from Dr. Natalie Kondor at home along with his home nurses Janou and Karen and PSW Tammy, whom he trusted and appreciated so much.

A Celebration of Life BBQ with special music by James Ryce will be held on Saturday, September 10 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at his son’s home at 1011 Cunningham Road, off Hwy 15 in Codes Corners, Kingston. All are welcome.

A private interment will follow at a later date at Plum Hollow Cemetery, Lyndhurst.

Donations in Sam’s name can be made to University Hospitals Kingston Foundation designated for the Adult Special Services Fund of the Cancer Centre #4-55 Rideau Street, Kingston, Ontario K7K 2Z8. With thanks to Maggie McDougall for all her help.
