Obituary for Leslie Kenneth (Ken) Veley

VELEY, Leslie Kenneth (Ken)
July 31, 1948 – December 18, 2021

Peacefully at Kingston General Hospital, with his sons by his side. Ken was finally reunited with the love of his love, his wife Susan, who predeceased him in 2010. Sadly missed but forever remembered with laughter and love by his sons, Grigg and Chris, and his honorary children Derek Brown and Sarah Flowers. Ken was the proud Papa of Jacob (Tania) and Sydney (Malcolm), and the over-the-moon in love Great-Papa of Eli and Esmae. Predeceased by parents William Glen and Amelia Mary, as well as his kid sister Gin. Ken is survived by his brother, Rick, and a vast but close knit and much loved network of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in both Canada and the United States. Ken retired after more than 35 years of service with Correctional Service Canada, starting his career at Kingston Penitentiary, moving to Millhaven Institution the first day it opened in the wake of the infamous KP Riot. During his time with CSC he proudly served on both the Local and National Executive of the Public Service Alliance of Canada. Upon his retirement, Ken was deeply humbled when he was made an honorary lifetime member of the PSAC. Loyal and dedicated in defending workers rights, Ken found satisfaction in the fight, but was much more fond of making people laugh. Always quick with a joke, and a little longer with a story, Ken kept anyone in his company entertained, whether on the golf course, around a poker table, or even over breakfast as he scratched lottery tickets. Ken’s last words were about what a great life he had lived, and how lucky he was to have loved and been loved by so many. He was and always will be, loved, indeed! Due to current restrictions, as well as Ken’s wish that everyone spend the holidays with their loved ones, the family has opted for a small private ceremony at this time, to be followed by a proper Celebration of Life in the spring. If so desired, memorial donations to the children’s charity of your choice -- especially those addressing child and youth mental health needs – would be appreciated by Ken and his family.
