PORTER, Earl Frederick
April 3rd, 1927- June 25th, 2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Earl Frederick Porter. He left us peacefully in his sleep at the Kingston General Hospital at the age of 92. Born to Charles and Elsie (nee Hill) in Toronto, Earl was older brother to Donald and beloved nephew of Florence Hill. He was a passionate builder, teacher, father and grandfather. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in Geography, and later, teaching. As a dedicated teacher, he educated students at Rideau District High School for 14 years. Earl loved to design and build, making his own furniture, computers, electronics, photographic development system and water purification system. He also constructed two houses, one in Port Hope and one in Kingston. An avid tennis player and a keen bridge player, he passed along his enthusiasm to his children and grandchildren. Earl had an interest in travelling, especially by train, and particularly loved Switzerland. He was a great photographer, back when taking a photograph required an understanding of light and film speed, and he developed and enlarged his own pictures. In his earlier years he enjoyed flying and had his private pilot’s license. As a member of the Unitarian Church in Kingston, he was active for over 40 years and represented the Kingston congregation at international meetings. Earl will be missed by his wife Beverly, his companion and support of many years. He is predeceased by his son Ross. He is survived by his children and extended family: Glenn Porter, Grant and Louise Porter and their children Jennifer and Andrew; Keith and Debbie Porter and their children Christopher, Megan and Brandon; Janet Porter-Chaudhry and Sunil Chaudhry and their children Ross, Lisa and Anita. His was a life well lived and he will be deeply missed.
A memorial for Earl will be held on Saturday August 3rd at 3pm at the Kingston Unitarian Fellowship, 206 Concession Street Kingston, with a reception to follow at the same location. If friends so desire, memorial donations can be made to the Kingston Unitarian Fellowship or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
