Constance Louise Hutchison (nee Craig) died peacefully at age 80 at Rideaucrest Home on Friday, November 11,2022 with her husband, Bill, at her side.
You might have met her riding her horse, Babe, on the forest trails east of Kingston, walking along the city's waterfront, rummaging for novels at the public library, campaigning door to door during elections, staffing a desk at the St. Lawrence College library, and volunteering with Hospice Kingston to help seriously ill people.
She received the Hospice Kingston Volunteer Award for the year of 1997-1998, and later won the June Callwood Outstanding Volunteer Award of 1998 from Hospice Ontario.
She was active in helping others throughout her life. She worked at Browndale in Toronto, worked as children's librarian and helped to found and staff the Girls' Group Home in London, Ontario, and helped found a day nursery in Woodstock.
She was born in Philadelphia and came to Canada as a child with her family. She graduated from Havergal and the University of Western Ontario where she met her husband of 54 years walking between University and Middlesex Colleges. She retired from the library at St. Lawrence College in 1994.
She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in 2017. Her bravery and kindness made the last years of her life a joy as well as loss.
She is survived by her husband, nephews, nieces and their children. She was predeceased by her father Albert (Gus) Craig, her mother Catherine Craig (nee Carleton) and her sister Catherine Bayne. In keeping with Connie’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A service and burial will be held at a later date.
