Obituary for Zita Hilda Poole

Zita Hilda Poole
POOLE Zita Hilda (formerly DOSSETT), Zita Hilda Mary Roberta (nee Sampson) 1924, Zita Hilda Mary Roberta (nee Sampson) 1924 - 2017. After a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease, Zita passed away to be with Jesus on Dec. 29, 2017. She is survived by her children, David (Wendy), John, and Amanda, and grandchildren, Spencer, Henry, Wesley, Hannah, Taryn and Ethan. Born in Kingston, Ont., Zita attended the former Notre Dame Convent (Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic High School) and Queen's University. During the war she met Flt. Lt. Trevor Arthur Dossett, an RAF Spitfire pilot from the U.K., who was on assignment in Kingston to train Canadian pilots. Following the war, they married and settled in her home town of Kingston. Trevor Dossett passed away in 2013. Zita loved to travel, ski, and swim, and participated in aquafit classes and tennis to keep in shape. She was a talented real estate and insurance agent, developing and managing dozens of beautiful properties. She was also an active member of several organizations, including the Rotary Club of Kingston, Chamber of Commerce, and KFL&A Public Health. She served on the Ontario College of Dental Surgeons discipline committee, and was president of the Kingston branch of the Queen's University Alumni Association. She lived her life with unwavering integrity and determination. When a Satan's Choice gang member spat on her in the downtown, she refused to back down. Charges were laid and she was able to pick the offender out of a police lineup in spite of his lawyer dramatically changing his client's appearance. She was a loyal supporter of local businesses and advocated for a family-owned drug store threatened with expropriation for the 1976 Sailing Olympics venue. As a public appointee to the public health board, she helped to expose a financial scandal that eventually lead to a significant improvements in the board's public accountability. In 1991, she married Robert Poole and travelled widely with him until his death in 1998. Zita was a devoted mother and Catholic, who attended church regularly until she was unable to do so. She prayed for her children and grandchildren. We are grateful to the doctors, nurses and caregivers at Providence Manor for their exemplary kindness to our mother. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the UHKF , in support of Providence Manor Foundation. A memorial service will be held in the spring.
